reading: Career of Evil

March 20, 2016

I love mystery novels and television shows. When J. K. Rowling was revealed as the writer behind the pen name Robert Galbraith, I knew that I would need to pick up her book, The Cuckoo's Calling. I have voraciously read the books that followed: The Silkworm and Career of Evil.

The series follows Cormoran Strike, a burly ex-military private investigator as he battles insolvency and solves mysteries with his partner and secretary, the capable and beautiful Robin. The way that the characters slowly grow and reveal themselves in these books is so interesting. They make huge personal gains and develop a strong friendship, despite Robin's fiancee's objections to her working in the dangerous field of criminal investigation.

Career of Evil was unique in the scheme of the series because it had narration from the two main characters, as well as the killer from the story. The identity of the killer isn't revealed until the very end, and I was so surprised that the mystery was maintained despite the reader being in the culprit's head part of the time.

J. K. Rowling continues to prove herself to be a masterful storyteller, and character creator in her mystery novels. Pick them up. Read them. They are so good.

I don't know about you, but I am ready for spring. This past week was quite cold, but this week should be warming up. I am excited to bring out my spring clothes. One fun new thing that I am doing this month is participating in the #marchwearwhatwear challenge on Instagram. It's fun to interact with other people every day about an outfit prompt and see what is in everyone's closet.
